Portfolio Project - Research Part One

To begin this posting, I wanted to change the genre of what I was preparing for the deal with the devil piece. I was thinking too broad with the dystopian genre choice when - previously - illustrating this idea, and the more current is not following the genre characteristics as closely. I'm going to direct my focus to this story for my film opening, and the genre it follows is fantasy rather than dystopian; due to it being more closed in on a character piece. The fantasy genre is targeted at both adults and children alike in that they offer escapism from work or school into a different realm.  In fantasy films, the hero often undergoes some mystical experience and must ask for aid from powerful, superhuman forces on the outside. This genre characteristic is what my idea follows.

A sinful deal with the devil - is one possibility for the name of the film opening. My character will follow the story with realism to engage the audience in a way for them to compare to their own lives before beginning the fantasy elements. As my plot develops, I want a non-diegetic sound to convey a ticking of a clock that slowly becomes louder and more noticeable to our main character.

I have taken inspiration from television shows that show different aspects of devilish power. Lucifer (2016- ) is one of these shows in the fantasy genre. The story is about the devil himself who wanted a vacation and had enough of being the dutiful servant in Hell and decides to spend some time on Earth; to better understand humanity. He settles in Los Angeles - the City of Angels. Throughout his vacation with humanity, he takes up helping the LAPD with crime-solving. Tom Ellis - the actor- takes on a mischievous representation of the devil, which I admire as the show progresses; and attracts an audience to the fantasy crime show. The character is a very luxurious person who deals with favors along the way - which he does as entertainment of human desires. The powers and abilities he posses add to the fantasy of the show and a more realistic devil. Lucifer can see what it is that a person desires from deep within. He also possesses the superhuman abilities that are a norm to him, like the ability to not die from human attempts or the obvious angel wings he has.

According to research by data measurement firm Nielsen, the fantasy series ranked as the most-streamed program in North America out of all shows available on Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, and Hulu based on data collected between 17th August and 23rd August.

The character I am building from is not that of the devil but one - which makes a deal with him. Lucifer has inspired the concept of his transactions and the spiraling that usually unfolds from mythical interaction. My character will have a time limit of his greed being satisfied - and the devil wanting his repayment. The spiraling will be that of my character- mentally and physically - instead of society being impacted negatively from mythical intervention. My original genre ideas would make a dystopian fiction of this interaction, which eventually turns south.

Public interest in Satan doesn’t seem likely to end anytime soon. The devil seems to have carved out a place in the cultural spotlight unrivaled since the 1980s. 2020 audiences may be desperate for escapism with the current world of a deadly pandemic limiting most aspects of life. The integration of fantasy would be grabbing for current audiences as well as the realism of a drama. My film opening hopes to cover both of these genres.

 Until next time!
